A project site that will bring a new water reticulation network for parts of Centurion was handed over on Thursday.

MMC for infrastructure Darryl Moss conducted the ceremony.

He said: “A total of R16 million has been made available in the 2016/17 financial year for the replacement of worn-out water networks and a further R1 million has been ring-fenced for lengthening of water pipelines.”

The upgrade in Clubview and Hennopspark had become urgent due to the dolomitic geology of the area, and the possibility of sinkholes forming when water pipes leaked.

The water reticulation network pipes in Clubview and Hennopspark were old 75mm asbestos cement pipes installed decades ago.

They were brittle, and cracking and breaking up.

Ward 66 Councillor Ina Strijdom said residents lived in fear every time there was a water leak, because those were known to trigger sinkholes.

She said the metro would keep residents informed by both letter and whatsapp groups, of the work schedule in their area.

There would be water interruptions while work was in progress.

All paving, concrete and road surfaces damaged during construction would be repaired.

The metro was planning to complete the project within six months.

Similar pipe-replacement projects were underway in the Ga-Rankuwa Industrial area and Soshunguve.
