Pretoria cop killers get life sentence

Two men who murdered a Hammanskraal police officer have both been sentenced to 57 years in jail.

Jack Muller and Lucas Hlatswayo were sentenced in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said Constable Joseph Chauke and his partner Constable Thabo Mhlanga were ambushed while attending to a business robbery in Temba in August 2014.

“The suspects had broken into the shop through the roof,” said Moremi.

“When Chauke and Mhlanga arrived at the scene they were not aware that the robbers were still in the ceilling.”

Moremi said Chauke was shot in the upper body and died on the scene while Muhlanga survived the attack and was able to call for backup.

The Crime Intelligence Unit managed to arrest the robbers within eight months.

Tshwane North cluster commander Major-General Hilder Mohajane and Temba police station commander Brigadier Dibetle welcomed the sentence and applauded the members who cracked the case and made the conviction.

Mohajane said this was a good example to criminals who thought they could kill police officers and get away with it.
