A homeowner was shot in the leg while in his home by an ADT security guard reacting to an emergency alarm the homeowner had accidentally triggered early on Wednesday morning.

Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC) spokesperson Hannes du Buisson said his patroller was driving in Naaldehout Street in Heuweloord when a gunshot went off at 05:18.

“When he investigated, he discovered a resident had apparently been shot in the leg by an ADT reaction officer,” said Du Buisson.

He said information from the scene suggested the resident accidentally set off his alarm, and the officer rushed to the scene and entered the house via an open door.

“The officer then apparently came across the homeowner, still in bed, and fired one shot, hitting him in his right leg below the knee,” said Du Buisson.

ADT is investigating and will release a full statement during the course of the day.

The homeowner was taken to hospital.
