Police said a two-year-old boy was shot in the head in an attempted hijacking near the R55 in Centurion.

He tragically died on Sunday, police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele told Rekord on Monday.

“A man, woman and the two-year-old was in the vehicle targeted by five suspects,” Makhubele said.

“The man in the car had allegedly stopped next to the road to relieve himself and the woman also got out to put the baby in the backseat.”

Makhubele said the couple was ambushed by the five men.

“They robbed them of cash and cell phones.”

It seemed the robbers had planned on taking the family’s vehicle – and in a desperate attempt to save her child, still in the backseat of the car, the woman rushed to the driver’s seat and sped off.

“Shots were fired and a bullet went through the car injuring the child.”

The woman kept driving to seek help and only stopped when she saw an ambulance on the road.

Makhubele said the man and woman were unharmed, but the child died hours hours later.

Another shooting was reported in the same area.

A man was shot in the back and neck and taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Makhubele could, however, not provide more details on the matter.

“We suspect the cases might be linked. We are determined to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
