Condolences poured in on Thursday after the news that a Pretoria North school principal has died after shooting himself by accident.

Mourners on Facebook described Dr Willie Hendrikz, head of Theresa Park Primary School, as a “fantastic person” who left only good memories.

Hendrikz was cleaning his firearm at home on Wednesday when a shot went off, his deputy Willie Bosman said.

“The information we got from his wife was that a shot went off accidentally.”

It was not immediately clear whether he died on the scene.

The Gauteng department of education confirmed the death, saying it was still investigating the circumstances.

“We can confirm that the principal passed away yesterday while he was on sick leave but cannot confirm the cause of death, but an investigation is underway to determine that.”

The deputy principal said the departed Hendrikz was recuperating after an eye operation.

The accident happened around 13:30, Bosman said.

He said church leaders were at the school to comfort the learners and teachers.

Tanie Smit wrote on Facebook: “The shock of your death hit me today. You will always be a good friend, mentor and fantastic person.”

Brenda van Dyk said she had only beautiful memories of the principal.

Eric Streso said: “What a privilege to have had you in our lives. Rest softly, my friend.”
