No clear assessment could be made on the sinkhole in Centurion, ward 61 councillor Peter Sutton announced on Thursday afternoon.

Sutton said the size of the sinkhole, at the corner of Gerhard and Jean avenues, could not be determined.

“The hole is exceptionally deep and wide,” said Sutton.

He said an engineering report would be prepared in the next week.

“This will include circle drilling to determine the exact extend of the sinkhole.”

“The engineering report will take about a week to finalise. In this time we will keep residents regularly updated on the progress.”

The area was cordoned off early on Thursday morning to prevent a possible cave-in.

Sutton said the Tshwane metro formally barricaded off the affected areas on Thursday afternoon.

“From a safety perspective, provision will be made to allow access to the Zenex garage and other centres in the vicinity of the intersection.”

Sutton said the engineering report would answer many outstanding questions including the rehabilitation process, timelines to have the road reopened and the cause of the sinkhole.

He said the metro would do all it could to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
