A woman has told of a struggle with a smash-and-grab robber in which she was hit in the face with a hammer.

The attack happened at a traffic light crossing near the Swartkop Air Force base in Valhalla, Centurion on 10 May.

The woman, who would like to remain anonymous, was travelling on the old Johannesburg road.

“My car windows are slightly tinted and the thug wasn’t able to see anything inside the car, but he broke the window anyway,” she said.

“I put up a good fight and that’s when he hit me in the face with a hammer.”

Mike Bolhuis, a private specialist investigator in violent and economic crimes, said criminals tend to strike when motorists were concentrating on the traffic and they often targeted small items like handbags, cellphones and laptop computers.

“These crimes usually take place during the day at or near traffic intersections where motorists are compelled to travel slowly owing to traffic congestion,” he said.

“They also occur late at night or in the early morning hours when the roads are quiet and motorists are less vigilant.”
