Residents of the Reeds and Rooihuiskraal in Centurion are determined to take back control of their areas.

On Saturday a group of residents attended a meeting at the Rooihuiskraal library to start a residents’ association.

Ward councillor Casper McDonald said the association will look into the most important problems in the community and solve them.

“This is the beginning of something new and exciting for our communities. We will work closely with businesses and schools in the area,” said McDondald.

“This is to make the best of every opportunity to change our community for the better.”

He said that partners have already put shoulder to the wheel and had an early start to contribute time and resources as part of Madiba day.

“The library’s auditorium walls were fixed and received a fresh coat of paint. It was part of the community’s contribution to donate their time to honour Mandela’s legacy.”

He said the auditorium’s doors also received a fresh coat of varnish and the window glass will be covered for when nurses have private consultations in the auditorium.

Medipark also donated a new carpet and a number of scatter cushions for the children’s reading nook in the library.

“The children now do not have to sit on cold vinyl tiles in winter. The carpet and cushions create a soft and quiet ambiance making the reading environment a comforting and peaceful listening experience.”

McDonald said contractors would also donate their time during the week to repaint the markings in the parking area.

“It was a great team effort and stands as the beginning of great things to come,” he said.
