The Tshwane metro police (TMPD) said they arrested 37 people throughout Pretoria on Wednesday.

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said in a statement that five of the arrested were believed to be members of a syndicate.

“The officers received a complaint from a tracking company about cell phones stolen on Saturday.

“They rushed to the location provided by the tracking company and found five suspects with the stolen cell phones and sim cards in an apartment,” he said.

Mahamba said the five were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property including cell phones, chargers, earphones, cell phone pouches and sim cards.

The SAPS said they seized items worth R500 000 similar to those reported stolen in a business robbery in Olievenhoutbosch.

“We also found a laptop believed to be used for hacking into cell phones,” they said, adding that the laptop would be sent for a forensic analysis.

“There is a possibility a charge of business robbery would be added to the possession one.”

Mahamba said: “We hope that the arrested could lead us to other syndicates.”

Mahamba said the metro police had made other arrests.
