UPDATE: Security guard critically injured in Forest Hill robbery

A security guard is in a critical condition after a shooting during an attempted robbery at Forest Hill Mall.

The guard suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring said paramedics found a man lying in the parking area of the mall on arrival.

“He was immediately assessed, treated and transported to a nearby hospital to receive further medical care,” said Meiring.

According to police spokesperson Captain, Bonginkosi Msimanga three people entered a Vodacom store around 10:00 and demanded that staff open a security safe.

He said one had gone into the shop first and pretended to be interested in purchasing a phone.

“He was later joined by his two accomplices who held a security guard at gunpoint. They then took eight workers and two customers into the manager’s office and demanded that they open a safe,” said Msimanga.

He said when the safe would not open, the robbers fled empty-handed.

“On their way out, in the parking area, they shot a security guard,” he said.

Forest Hill City general manager, Lionel van Lis, in a statement, thanked the security team at the mall for its immediate response.

He said it responded immediately and alerted the SAPS resulting in the robbery being foiled.

“The robbers left empty-handed due to our security team foiling the heist. Our security team is working closely with the SAPS and have handed over the relevant CCTV footage to investigators. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to provide further details to the media. However, we are confident that this incident was handled with the utmost professionalism by the Forest Hill City security team together with the SAPS,” he said.

He said Forest Hill City would like to reiterate that the safety and well-being of tenants and shoppers was a top priority and would continue to work closely with the police to achieve this.

Msimanga said no arrest had been made yet and a case of attempted business robbery and attempted murder were being investigated.
