Centurion boy honours father’s memory at his matric farewell

It has been a dream for a Pierre van Ryneveld to go to his matric farewell in a police vehicle since his stepfather was killed on duty with the flying squad.

And Blaine Calloway’s dream came true on Friday, with the help of Lieutenant-Colonel Stephan Fourie who arranged with the flying squad to make his dream a reality.

This year marks 10 years since Bradley John Meyer was killed.

Fellow matriculants at Cornwall Hill College looked with envy when Blaine and his partner Alnnah Maistrellis arrived in a police vehicle at their matric farewell.

Meyer passed away when Blaine was 8 years old.

His mother Tracy said she was happy her son’s dream had been fulfilled.

She said she once asked her son what he remembered most about his father and he said the police vehicle.

Tracy saw the need to make sure his dream was realized.

“I sent my friend Teresa Fourie whose husband is also a police officer to arrange a vehicle for my son’s matric farewell. Her husband did not hesitate to help us,” she said.

She said she wanted her husband to be part of the day.

Fourie said he lent a helping hand because he believed that everyone should live their dream.

He said Blaine was one of them because he was a police orphan.

“We have to look after our orphans all the way. In the police, we are all family and take care of each other. The fact that Blaine is living without his father made me want to help,” he said.

Blaine said he was ecstatic to honour his father’s memory.

“I felt like a part of him was with me on that day,” he said.
