Legal battle erupts over Centurion sinkhole

Businesses around the Gerhard Street and Jean Avenue sinkhole are taking matters to court.

A major sinkhole in the heart of Centurion has turned into a bone of legal contention

Business affected by the hole at the corner of Gerhard Street and Jean Avenue have appointed a legal firm to act on their behalf.

They have given Jacques Classen attorneys a mandate to pressure the metro into speeding up repairs to the sinkhole.

The firm lodged an application to this effect to the High Court in Pretoria this week.

The application demands answers from municipal manager Moeketsie Motsola on reasons for delays in repairing the sinkhole.

The application also wants the metro to reveal which contractor will be appointed to fix the sinkhole.

The sinkhole was discovered by contractors in May of this year, forcing thousands of motorists to use alternative routes instead.

As a result, local businesses in the vicinity have suffered a large drop in income as customers now avoid the area altogether.

The News Café situated at the @Ease business centre, which is right next to the sinkhole, closed its doors last month as its owner Garry Canaris could no longer afford to sustain the business and pay staff salaries.

The metro announced on 29 November that a contractor would be appointed, for repairs to begin in January 2018.

Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said in a statement the metro would do a site handover to the contractor in December.

“Barring unforeseen circumstances, the R25 million project is estimated to take a maximum period of nine months to complete,” said Bokaba.

Bokaba said the public, and in particular those affected by the sinkhole, would be kept updated.

The metro has not yet responded to enquiries about the legal proceedings.
