Matriculants at Sutherland High School were among those who joined in on the celebrations when the national senior certificate results were released last week.

School principal Peter Stone said he was pleased the class of 2017 maintained a 100 percent pass rate, with 327 distinctions and 210 bachelor degree access passes.

“We are proud to claim a 100 percent pass rate each year since our first group matriculated back in 1989,” Stone said.

He said the academic staff was the backbone of the school and worked tirelessly to ensure learners’ academic success.

“All of our educators are well qualified and each subject area is headed up by an expert in the field,” he said.

The school’s head of academics, Elinor du Preez, worked with a team that followed the progress of each learner. This allowed for potential problems to be identified early and for support programmes to be offered.

“Educators focus on the basics, such as regular homework, reachable goals and neat, functional workbooks,” Stone said.

He said all learners took responsibility for their own progress.

“Every learner is given the opportunity to grow and thrive. Strong discipline contributes towards a nurturing environment and ensures behaviour conducive to success. The absolute enthusiasm of learners can be sensed from the moment you enter the school grounds,” he said.

“Simply put, the learners love their school.”

The learners who obtained the most distinctions were Mikara Rangasamy and Khanyisile Nkosi, who each obtained eight distinctions.
