VIDEO: ID termination rumour a ‘hoax’

Mkuseli Apleni

The department of home affairs has condemned false reports about the imminent termination of the green ID books.

Director-general Mkuseli Apleni squashed the rumour at a media briefing in Centurion on Wednesday.

Social media reports have been doing rounds since late last year that the department would terminate the IDs on 31 March 2018.

“This had an effect of driving citizens in great numbers to home affairs offices to apply for smart ID cards in panic,” said Apleni.

He said though the department had responded swiftly to deny the rumour, it returned at the beginning of January.

“We therefore call upon members of the public to ignore these mischievous messages.

“These false messages are putting our offices under extreme pressure, unduly, as people rush there in their numbers to get smart ID cards.”

He said people were therefore forced into long queues in the heat unnecessarily.

“This is a situation to which we do not want to subject citizens and officials. It is in our interest that citizens should apply for and receive their secured smart ID cards; it is in their interest and in that of the country. But this has to be done systematically.

“We intend to continue rolling out additional smart ID card offices in order to cover the majority of our population in all provinces.”

Apleni said seven million smart cards had been issued since 2013.

“In spite of setbacks that may arise from these false reports, we urge our people not to despair. They should continue to apply for their smart ID cards without the fear of 31 March.”
