UPDATE: EFF Menlyn protest marked by vandalism, looting

An EFF protest against an allegedly ‘racist’ advertisement placed by the international H&M clothing company turned sour when protesters vandalised and looted a shop in Menlyn Park shopping centre.

EFF supporters destroyed the window of the store, vandalised property and stole from it.

Calm has since been restored at the Menlyn shopping centre following the chaotic protest earlier today, which resulted in police cordoning off the entire level on which the shop was located.

Police also cautioned members of the public during the protest to avoid the mall even though they maintained the situation were “under control.”

The protesters dispersed at around 14:00, according to Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.

No injuries have been reported and no arrests were made.

Other shops at the mall were closed to prevent further vandalism.

Normal trading has resumed in the mall since then, according to Menlyn Park general manager Olive Ndebele.

The incident comes after the international clothing company H&M came under fire for an advertisement showing a black child in a hoodie that read “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle”, sparking worldwide outrage on social media and other platforms.

The company has since apologised for the advertisement.

The Menlyn incident was one of several such incidents reported across the province, said SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

“At the East Rand Mall the protesters managed to enter the shop and stole several items,” he said.

“Police had to intervene and dispersed the group of protesters by firing rubber bullets.”
