‘Cable thief’ caught in the act in Centurion


The Tshwane metro police have arrested a man (30) who was caught allegedly digging trenches with intention to steal cables in Centurion.

The suspect was caught on the corner of Nellmapius and Meadstream roads on Friday evening.

The man, along with three others were allegedly trying to steal electricity cable when metro police and Brinant security officers moved in on them.

“We received a tip off about cable theft that was in progress,” said TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

“On further investigation we found four suspects busy digging trenches with the aim of stealing cables.”

Mahamba said the police chased the men, but only managed to catch one.

TMPD was committed to dealing with cable theft as it was known to be the leading problem to power failure in the city, Mahamba said.

“We will deal with criminals according to the law and we will continue to deploy our members to various hot spots.”

Mahamba urged members of the public to act swiftly and report cable thet to TMPD at 012 358 7095/6 or to the police.

The men were dinging trenches when police caught them.
