Let’s be honest, when it comes to sleep you’ve probably heard all the interesting facts before. At one stage it was suggested that eight hours of sleep should be the minimum per night, but that number has since been reduced drastically. The latest facts suggest that you should break up your sleeping time in two.
Realistically, we are all different. Thus, the amount of sleep we each need differs. It is also likely to differ from one country to the next. Research is still being done regarding the average number of hours slept based on the country in which one resides. But the current findings will surprise you.
The worldwide average is six hours and 27 minutes. And it could be argued that one of the greatest worldwide sleep deprivers is a certain lifestyle. Most of us live a very fast lifestyle, with our smart devices only being put aside right before we go to bed. It is, however, recommended to do so an hour before going to sleep.
Which countries get the most sleep?
That would be the Dutch. According to research done in 2016, the Dutch are getting around five minutes more than what is still recommended as the ideal eight hours of sleep every night. Clearly their laid-back approach to life pays off.
Next on the list is New Zealand. Whether they are snoozing their alarm clocks more, or if it is just all that fresh air and abundance of time spent in nature, New Zealanders also get more than the average amount of sleep.
Sadly, many first-world countries end near the back of the list. Perhaps those nations’ stress levels affect sleeping patterns.
Where do South Africans fall?
South Africans experience the lowest amount of sleep every night, with the majority of us going to bed after midnight and getting up at 06:20. We have almost fallen right to the bottom of the list, but thankfully cope pretty well. South Africans are, however, officially the earliest risers. What’s more, findings show that SA residents have the best sleep on a Wednesday night.
