The Tshwane metro mayor has announced the metro would spend R25-million “to restore business activity” to Centurion following the sinkhole disruptions.

Speaking this week, Mayor Solly Msimanga said the sinkhole on the corner of Jean Avenue and Gerhard Street had caused massive disruption to business and traffic flow in the area.

“We have recorded a total of 27 sinkholes requiring varied extents of repairs and restorations,” he said.

“The city is committed to addressing the problem over the next financial years.”

Msimanga said the repair costs to all the sinkholes were estimated at R100 million.

The News Café at the @Ease Centre had to close its doors in November last year because of the sinkhole.

The Zenex garage has since been used as a detour off the closed street.

“This is the largest single cost of repair and the tender has been awarded to a contractor with the necessary capacity to undertake the work.”

Two other sinkholes prioritised for repair are those in Clubview at a cost of approximately R3-million. These sinkholes will potentially affect 900 households.

The other is at 2nd Avenue in Claudius and would need about R15-million to repair.

Msimanga said in the coming weeks, the metro would see how more funds can be reprioritised for the repairs within the present financial year.

The newly developed sinkhole along the R55 in Laudium is estimated to cost around R40-million to R50-million to fix.

“We are appreciative that the province will cover this cost.”

He said there were about eight sinkholes in Laudium alone and three were already being attended to.

“The city is also budgeting for repairing three additional sinkholes in the approaching financial year, while two smaller ones will be temporarily treated.”
