Businesses around a major sinkhole in the heart of Centurion are on tenterhooks about the process to fix the cavity.

They said this week they were fearing that the repairs would not be completed by 20 July as promised.

Businesswoman Esmé Janse van Rensburg said she had 10 fulltime employees with families.

She said she had done a survey with clients in an attempt to save her business.

“The people were shocked to discover that we are open and have not yet closed our doors,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

“Well, we’re hanging on by a thread,” she said.

Other businesses at the @ Ease Centre voiced similar fears of being penniless soon and unable to pay their staff.

The hole on the corner of Jean Avenue and Gerhard Street made its appearance in May this year.

This forced motorists to find alternative traffic routes and pedestrians to give the spot a wide berth.

This dealt businesses in the area a serious blow.

Work to fix the hole got underway in January this year, with 20 July set as the deadline for completing the job.

Meanwhile, it is a scene of dust, litter and unkempt infrastructure.

Motorcycles, mostly delivery vehicles are using a pathway created for pedestrians as a thoroughfare.

A site inspection on Thursday revealed a power box is still open after Rekord reported on this in April.

A second sinkhole was discovered at the nearby Zenex filling station after heavy rains earlier this year.

This station is also being used as link to access unaffected parts of Jean Avenue to access the Gautrain station.

Over 5 000 vehicles pass through this station on a daily basis.

Owner Philip Lourens earlier said the premises was not equipped to handle the traffic flow.

Attempts to acquire feedback from the Tshwane metro and the MMC for roads and transport Sheila Lynn Senkubuge were unsuccessful.

The cordoned off sinkhole.

This power box has been standing open for months.
