It has been suggested that chimpanzees are our closest cousins. We share behaviours with them like communication, tool making and a selfless concern for the well-being of others. It seems only apt to celebrate these wonderful creatures and raise awareness for their well-being. Today is the first ever World Chimpanzee Day.
Yoran and Absalom are two male chimpanzees at the National Zoological Garden and can be seen in their lovely outdoor exhibit playing and enjoying the sun.
This day aims to highlight the need for worldwide participation in their care, protection and conservation. Special focus will be placed on the severe loss these apes endure as well as wildlife trafficking, disease and bushmeat trade.
