UPDATE: “Solly safe, for now”- ANC

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga lived to see another day as the first citizen of the capital after two motions that were baying for his head failed today.

In a dramatic turn of events in the Sammy Marks council chambers, Msimanga’s political life was spared as the meeting was postponed due to council not reaching a quorum.

The EFF walked out of proceedings after the speaker, Katlego Mathebe, ruled out the EFF’s urgent motion of no confidence, citing flouting of procedure in that they did not submit a written motivation for tabling their motion.

This saw a frustrated EFF caucus leader Benjamin Disoloane tell the speaker that they would be pursuing legal action against her following her ruling and that a motion against her would be coming as well.

However, the motion tabled by the ANC met all requirements and complied with the procedures of council and as such it still stood, leaving the speaker with 30 days to once again decide the fate of the embattled Tshwane mayor.

Msimanga told reporters that the EFF was not genuine in the issues they were raising in their motion and it was clearly just politicking.

“When I read the motion, I could technically see what was wrong with it legally and we tabled it in council and the speaker applied her mind.”

Msimanga said they were still willing to work with the EFF and that there was no way they could continue to govern without the EFF.

“We are going to reach out to the EFF; we are going to work with them. It would be delusional to think we can do it without the EFF. We might not be in a solid and formal partnership, but they have worked with us on a number of things,” said Msimanga.

He said they were aware that there were unconfirmed reports of looming protest action.

“We encourage the people of Tshwane to not allow themselves to be used as political pawns to service a narrow political agenda.

“We will not be distracted by the political posturing and grandstanding of the ANC. We are forging ahead with our commitment to stabilise, revitalise and deliver to the people of Tshwane,” said Msimanga.

Meanwhile, ANC chair Kgosi Maepa told reporters that they had not lost momentum – they would still be seeking to remove the mayor and they would make sure it happened.

“The motion has not been abandoned and it is still on the agenda,” said Maepa.

He said they would be joining the EFF in court because they want an independent institution to review the decision of the speaker.
