Van Wyk was on his way back home after giving a tenant a lift to work when he was killed just 500m from the smallholding where he was staying.
This happened last Tuesday around 17:00.
Van Wyk was hit in his left shoulder and the bullet is said to have penetrated his heart.
The attackers made off with Van Wyk’s cellphone, but did not take his vehicle.
Erasmia police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said no arrests had been made.
“We continue to appeal to the people of Erasmia with any information to call 0800-10111 or 012-370-1777 ,” said Moloto.
Family member Michelle Saayman said relatives were heartbroken.
“The family is devastated and our hearts are in pieces,” Saayman said.
She described Van Wyk as someone who was always willing to do right by his fellow man, “sometimes even at his own expense”.
Van Wyk is survived by his mother, his sister Petro and brother Derick.
