LISTEN: Blood sisters turn crime scenes back into homes

North sisters have founded a business mopping up blood at crime scenes so that the victims do not have to suffer a double trauma.

Known as the ‘blood sisters’, Roelien Schutte and Eileen de Jager of Montana founded the Bloed Susters Crime Scene Cleanup group “to turn crime scenes back into homes” speedily.

“We saw the need for this service as we came upon families who did not know what to do with the aftermath of a traumatic incident.

We then realised that the first responders do not have the time nor the training to clean up where a trauma scene arose, so we got our thoughts together and started the business.

It took years to establish the correct chemicals and techniques to where we are today,” said de Jager adding that they now had 11 branches countrywide and had assisted over 9 000 families thus far.

“We started with this service during 2000, but officially opened the business in 2010 when we started to expand as franchises across South Africa.”

She said dealing with the aftermath was often worse for loved ones than the trauma itself.

“And people do not realise what the effect of dealing with the aftermath themselves will be on themselves and their families.

“Even worse, when normal cleaners or domestic workers are forced to clean up after such an event.

As professionals in this field, we handle the trauma different as we are not emotionally involved. This helps because the families have to deal with the trauma emotionally, they do not have to deal with it physically as well,” said Schutte.

She said some people chose to clean-up after a traumatic event because they think it would give them some kind of closure.

“We talked to hundreds of people who actually thought this and confirmed the opposite. As soon as you physically touch the aftermath, it gets embedded in your subconscious and can later bring along problems such as depression and anxiety.”

She said they cleaned up and or and decontaminated crime- or trauma scene, hoarding, gross filth, sewage and fire and flood remediation.

“We clean up where a normal cleaning company cannot and specialise in hazardous substance mop-ups,” said de Jager adding they had three branches in Pretoria, three in Johannesburg and one each in Centurion, Nelspruit, Durban, Cape Town and Jeffreys Bay.
