Centurion residents have again voiced concerns over a dangerous intersection, following a recent accident involving four vehicles.
Five people were injured on Thursday evening last week at the R114 intersection with the R511.
The accident happened at around 17:00, according to Emer-G-Med emergency service spokesperson SJ Fourie.
“Three of the patients were transported to nearby hospitals with moderate injuries,” he said.
Two more passengers sustained only minor injuries.
Fourie said the intersections along the infamous R511 were especially dangerous and paramedics were often dispatched to the area.
The intersections include the N14, R114 and R562-Mnandi Road.
A procurement process had been started to build traffic signals at these intersections, but it couldn’t be soon enough for some residents such as Elke Haas.
Haas had been advocating for the installation of traffic signals at the intersections for about a year and a half.
“We are still waiting to hear when the traffic signals will be built,” said Haas.
Given the short period before Christmas, Haas said, the installation of traffic signals before the end of the year seemed unlikely.
“Meanwhile people continue to get involved in accidents and some are even losing their lives,” she said.
Haas attributed the high number of accidents to motorists often speeding on the R511 and not stopping at any stop signs.
“We feel that only traffic signals will truly force motorists to stop or at least to slow down.”
