A man was seriously injured when he fell off a bridge after watching a performance of the international group Mumford & Sons at the Voortrekker Monument on Sunday night.

David Steyn (32) was crossing Eufees Road towards the Heartfelt Arena to catch a taxi home after the show, said his twin brother Herman.

“He was walking towards the arena, not realising he was on a bridge as there were no railings and it was very dark.”

Steyn fell off the bridge and landed on the concrete shoulder of the road below.

His brother said David was seriously injured. A helicopter took him to Milpark hospital in Johannesburg where he remained in intensive care.

“He broke his tibia, his knee, his nose and his femur. He also has a lot of cuts on his body.”

He apparently took most of the impact of the fall on his left leg, which saved him from brain, neck and back injuries.

Steyn underwent a second operation on Tuesday was expected to be under sedation the next three to five days.

Herman urged possible eyewitnesses to get in touch with him.
