Parts of Pretoria were hit by flash floods on Thursday afternoon, Tshwane emergency services (TES) said.

Centurion suffered the most damage.

Spokesperson Johan Pieterse urged motorists to exercise caution.

“Keep your car’s headlights on, avoid low water bridges and reduce your speed. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t see the road surface, do not drive across it as your car may wash away.”

The South African Weather Service said the thunderstorms were expected to continue.

Forecaster Lebogang Mashile said the storms should subside by 16:00 but more rain could be expected through the night.

“We are also expecting a 60% chance of thundershowers on Friday, and a 30% chance on Saturday.”
